The Wicksteed [amusement] Park is the strongest of many links between Kettering in Northamptonshire (England) and its citizen-benefactor, Charles Wicksteed, who first arriving in 1871, at the age of twenty-four, set up works in the town in 1876, and, from then until his death in 1931, lived and thrived and spread goodwill there. This story of his life has particular interest to Northamptonshire people, and should appeal to a wider public for its vivid narrative of the family life, private enterprise, and public benevolence of a man of many interests (including healthy radicalism), who was active in Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian days, and who succeeded in buying happiness with the money he made.
