Between 1943 and 1980 the site was occupied by one of San Antonio’s best-remembered places of amusement, Playland Park. Like a giant magnet its “Forty Rides and Attractions” drew thousands of San Antonians and South Texans through its gates to savour the thrills, chills, and delights it had to offer. Step back in history and take one more ride on the giant wooden roller coaster (The Rocket, before it was moved to Knoebels and renamed Phoenix) or gallop upon a hand carved wooden carousel horse. It’s all here and forms yet another addition to Playland Park’s motto: “ Just for Fun.”

[BOOK 245A] DOUG GARNER: FOREST PARK HIGHLANDS. [2007] (16x23cm - 130 Pages - Many B&W photos). Forest Park Highlands was once St. Louis’ largest and best-known amusement park. In its earliest years, the Highlands boasted a fine theatre and one of the largest public swimming pools in the United States. After the 1904 world’s fair closed, several attractions found a new home at the Highlands; the large pagoda - a re-creation of the temple of Nekko, Japan - served as the park’s bandstand for several years. Roller coasters are the lifeline of every good amusement park, and the Highlands always had two. The end came in a spectacular fire that decimated almost the entire park on 19 July 1963. Only the Comet roller coaster, the Ferris wheel, the Dodgems, the Carousel, and the Aero Jets survived. This book covers other historic St. Louis amusement parks too: Suburban Gardens, West End Heights, Delmar Gardens, Westlake Park, Chain of Rocks Park, and Holiday Hill.
